“A dark room with tiny lamps flickering on the tables, a lounge singer crooning, a handkerchief dance floor with couples movin' slow, and a long, cool cocktail list painted on the smoked mirror behind the bar: Such is the divine decadence of the Laurentian Room… It took a hat trick to embark on the project of returning the Laurentian Room to its 1930s art deco glory. And they've done it -- with sparkles on top.” Joanne Kates, Globe & Mail, March 5, 2005
The tasting menu
Rustic chicken skewers and charred corn with ancho chili and lime, served with a 2000 Off Dry Riesling (semi-dry in style with ruby grapefruit flavors and impeccable acid balance typical of Riesling grown in Niagara's heavy clay tills).
Hearts of romaine salad with oven dried tomatoes, herb crouton and grainy mustard and lemon vinaigrette. 2005 Rose (a dry style of rosé that is crisp and refreshing with aromas and flavours of pepper, spice and fresh berries).
Pan seared tiger shrimp puntanesca and roasted garlic oil. 2004 Cabernet-Merlot (medium bodied with attractive mint-berry fruit. Extended barrel ageing rounds the palate and lends notes of cedar and spice).
Duck braised in Gamay Noir, marinated shaved fennel, orange segments and artisan croutons. 2004 Gamay Reserve (full bodied Gamay with remarkably concentrated berry fruit, intense spice and pepper notes, and a robust core of tannin).
Roasted Niagara fruits, rosemary and vanilla glaze. 2004 Indian Summer Riesling (a lusciously sweet late-harvest wine with flavours of ripe pear, sweet sultana raisins and comb honey and pin-point acid balance).
